Data for these images is collected from the Terra and Aqua satellite missions. Their goal is to collect information about the Earth's water cycle. In addition, variables such as vegetation cover on the land, phytoplankton and dissolved organic matter in the oceans is being measured. C-Core uses MODIS bands to generate True Colour and Chlorophyll-a derived products.

The Chlorophyll-a products are derived from MODIS imagery. Chlorophyll-a is calculated from the Fluorescence Line Height (FLH) using an algorithm developed by LWBIN Researcher Greg McCullough (CEOS,University of Manitoba). The FLH algorithm which estimate magnitude of chlorophyll fluorescence in reflectance spectra are based on the measurements of reflectance at three wavelengths in the fluorescence spectral zone. In the case of MODIS these three bands are 667, 678 and 748 nm respectively. FLH is calculated using the Surface Reflectance from these MODIS bands. The Surface Reflectance is derived by subtracting additive atmospheric components such as haze from the Top of Atmosphere Reflectance. The product is generated in 1 km pixel size in LCC projection and stored in a geotiff format.

The True colour products use MODIS Bands 1, 4, and 3, respectively corresponding to the red, green, and blue range of the light spectrum, are assigned to the red, green, and blue channels of a digital image. This band combination helps highlight the chlorophyll-a in the water. These images are called true-colour or natural color because this combination of wavelengths is similar to what the human eye would see. The images are provided in geotiff format. The MODIS color images provide a visual material for the upper waters, coastal zones, and land areas.
